EMBROIDERY 101: ALL ABOUT CUSTOM EMBROIDERY
June 11th, 2024 • 7 minute read

Embroidery, a decorative art form that involves stitching designs onto fabric using thread, has been cherished for centuries. From traditional hand-stitched patterns to modern machine embroidery like we see at Underground Printing, this technique has evolved while retaining its charm and elegance. Through this blog, we’ll explore the ins and outs of embroidery. From embroidery’s fascinating history to why it’s a preferred printing method for custom apparel! Let’s get started…

What is Embroidery?

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. It can also incorporate other materials such as beads, sequins, and pearls! Embroidery can be done by hand or with an embroidery machine, and it is used to create intricate and durable designs and logos on clothing, accessories, home decor, and more.

Key Components of Embroidery

The key components of embroidery are the fabric, thread, needle, stabilizer, and hoop. The fabric is the base material on which the design or logo is embroidered. The thread used is a specialized embroidery thread, available in a variety of colors and textures, making the customization options endless! The needle is a sharp tool used to stitch the thread through the fabric. The stabilizer refers to a backing material that provides support and prevents stretching or puckering during the embroidery process, which could potentially ruin a design. The last component, the hoop, is a frame that holds the fabric tight while it’s being embroidered.

The Embroidery Process

Underground Printing’s screen printing process is broken into 5 parts: design creation and order placement, screen preparation, printing, curing, and shipping.

1. Design Creation & Order Placement: You create or upload your design or logo and place your order. Your design or logo is then uploaded into a specialized software for machine embroidery.

2. Fabric Preparation: The fabric is placed in a hoop to keep it taut and smooth, limiting the possibility of any print issues.

3. Stitching: The design is then stitched onto the fabric using a needle and thread. This can happen by hand or an embroidery machine. Thankfully, at UGP we have plenty of embroidery machines so we never have to stitch by hand!

4. Finishing: The embroidered piece is cleaned and any excess threads or stabilizers are removed.

5. Shipping: After finishing, the custom embroidered apparel is checked by our quality team to ensure everything is perfect then it’s shipped off to you, your group, business, or just wherever you need it to be!

A Brief History of Embroidery

Embroidery is one of the oldest forms of decorative art, with evidence of its use dating back to 30,000 BC! Early examples of embroidery have been found in various cultures around the world, including ancient Egypt, China, and the Middle East. Each culture developed its own unique styles and techniques, reflecting local traditions and materials.

Ancient and medieval embroidery began primarily in Egypt, China, and Europe. In Egypt, the earliest known embroidered items include clothing and ceremonial garments adorned with intricate patterns and symbols. For China, Chinese embroidery dates back to the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC), with silk being the primary material. Techniques such as Su embroidery are renowned for their delicate and detailed embroidery designs. During the Middle Ages, embroidery flourished in Europe, particularly in religious and royal garments. The Bayeux Tapestry, known as an 11th-century masterpiece, is a famous example of narrative embroidery.

All of this history has brought us to today with modern embroidery. The Industrial Revolution brought significant changes to embroidery with the invention of the embroidery machine. This advancement made the craft more accessible and allowed for mass production, like we do daily! Today, both hand and machine embroidery are popular, with machine embroidery offering speed and precision while hand embroidery continues to be valued for its artisanal quality.

The Future of Embroidery

Advancements in technology continue to shape the future of embroidery. Innovations such as digitized design software, automatic thread color changes, and improved embroidery machines make the process more efficient and accessible than ever. Despite these advancements, the timeless appeal and handcrafted quality of traditional embroidery remain cherished nonetheless.

Embroidery Techniques and Trends

While embroidery has changed and evolved over the years, we’re seeing great new techniques and trends! Some of these techniques and trends include hand embroidery, machine embroidery, applique, and 3D Puff Embroidery.

Hand embroidery encompasses various techniques such as cross-stitch, satin stitch, and crewel embroidery. Each technique offers different textures and effects, making hand embroidery a versatile and creative medium. Fun Fact: Hand embroidery is said to have become the “Ultimate Lockdown Hobby” in 2020! Unlike hand embroidery, machine embroidery uses computerized machines to stitch designs with precision and consistency. Ideal for large orders and complex designs that require uniformity, machine embroidery is a method used daily by us at Underground Printing and everyone else in the custom apparel industry. Applique is a technique that involves stitching a piece of fabric onto a larger piece, creating a layered effect. Applique adds depth and dimension to embroidered designs in a way traditional embroidery does not. Lastly, 3D puff embroidery uses foam to create raised, three-dimensional designs. This technique is popular for adding texture and visual interest to hats and caps.

At Underground Printing, we offer a wide range of services and printing methods. Our most popular printing methods are screen printing, digital or direct-to-garment printing, and embroidery. What sets embroidery apart is its durability, elegance, versatility, and customization.

Custom embroidery is the perfect way to elevate your logo or design while giving a sophisticated and high-quality appearance to garments. This level of professionalism makes embroidery ideal for corporate wear, uniforms, and more.

When talking about versatility, this technique can be applied to a wide range of fabrics including cotton, polyester, denim, and even leather. This versatility makes it suitable for various types of apparel from casual wear to formal attire. It also makes embroidery perfect for hats and bags!

Lastly, embroidery allows for a high level of customization. Designs can range from logos, monograms, and names to more intricate patterns.
